“Open Access” publishing refers to scholarship that is made freely available worldwide to anyone with an internet connection. It differs from “traditional publishing,” in which scholarship is published behind a paywall and accessible only to subscribers. “Hybrid” publishers employ both models, giving authors the option to choose whether their research will be published open access or not.
There are benefits and drawbacks of open access publishing, and authors should weigh both options carefully to choose the best model for their manuscripts.
